The New Age of Broadcasting: Advanced Media Delivery

ResearchChannel (http://www.researchchannel.org/ ) experiments with new methods of media delivery. We are both a traditional Television operation, and a developer of new media delivery methods usiong internet protocol.
The presentation will include information about recent projects and events such as The Visions ’05 Project where HD video from the Pacific sea-floor was multi-cast in real-time (http://www.igrid2005.org/program/applications/sciservices_terabitssea.html) and the Global N-way HD video conference (http://www.igrid2005.org/program/applications/videoservices_nwayconf.html ). The talk will include descriptions of the systems used, preparations at the remote sites and how problems were overcome. ResearchChannel is a world leader in video/audio delivery in many resolutions and methods. Michael Wellings, principal architect of these advanced projects will also include several examples of the state of the art in IP media delivery.
Quality and latency are the two areas that most impact the user experience and the value of interaction. ResearchChannel and the University of Washington have demonstrated - on the extreme end - High Definition Interactive technologies at bitrates up to 1.5gigabits ().
The details of the architecture, software development, and partnerships required to enable fabulous quality video approaching real time communication will be discussed as well as lessons learned from successful demonstrations at SuperComputing 2005 (http://sc05.supercomputing.org/), iGRID and JGNII will be discussed.
