Explore the Future of Educational Technology in Washington State

Join others in Washington's K-12, community college, higher education, museum, and library communities to learn how Internet2 applications and collaboration opportunities are providing world-class learning experiences, enabling Washington students at all levels to become deeply involved in new scientific, artistic, and cultural discovery. Hear how high-definition videoconferencing, virtual reality, simulations, remote instrumentation, real-time data visualization tools, and rich multimedia collections are being seamlessly integrated into curricula and educational culture across the country.

The University of Washington, K-20 Education Network, UW Computing & Communications, the Pacific Northwest Gigapop, UWTV, and the ResearchChannel are pleased to invite faculty, staff, technologists, public officials, and administrators from all educational sectors across the state to attend this event, free of charge, on January 8, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. to noon in Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.

11:00 - 11:25 Speaker TBD, NEPTUNE Project, University of Washington
Focus on Content: NEPTUNE
Through the NEPTUNE ocean research and education program at the University of Washington, K20 students will be able to access - from their desktop - real time data and images of ocean and sea floor activity associated with the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate off the coasts of Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. By connecting this undersea infrastructure to advanced research networks like Internet2, NEPTUNE will provide a platform for young scientists around the world to participate firsthand in ocean exploration, discovery, and understanding. Students will be able to study earthquakes, tsunamis, fish stock assets, marine mammal populations, metal and hydro-carbon deposits, and human influence on ocean climate systems. Students will even be able to remotely configure education-dedicated portions of the undersea sensor network to design and run experiments for science class projects and assignments. Learn how Internet2 and NEPTUNE are opening an unprecedented window into the northeast Pacific Ocean and seafloor.

11:25 - 11:40 Speaker TBD, Microsoft
Behind the Code
Occasionally the office of the CTO, David Vaskevitch, sits down with some of Microsoft's most influential technical employees to capture their stories. Instead of examining specific technologies, Behind the Code takes a closer look at the person, the career and what it takes to produce world-class software. See highlights from this exciting new program and learn how it can help motivate your students to pursue careers in computer science.
