ResearchChannel at NAB2006
Mike Wellings, director of engineering for ResearchChannel, presented to a crowd of more than 200 people in April at the 2006 National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas.
In his session, “The New Age of Broadcasting: Advanced Media Delivery,” Wellings spoke about ResearchChannel, including its role as a traditional television operation and its leading role as a developer of new media delivery methods using Internet Protocol.
His presentation included information about recent ResearchChannel projects and events, specifically VISIONS ’05, a collaboration that brought the seafloor — more than a mile below the surface of the ocean — to life, live and in high definition. This project illustrates the potential for high-definition video over IP to enhance, and even revolutionize, the way research is done.
“The VISIONS ’05 project was the first time high-definition images have been captured at that depth and made available as an IP-based feed,” Wellings said.
Wellings discussed the systems used for this event, remote-site preparation, problems and how they were overcome, and the partnerships required to make the event a success.
