Explore coral reefs with ResearchChannel
New program dives into the mystery of coral degradation in the Florida Keys

December 21, 2007
SEATTLE —Let ResearchChannel take you to the Florida Keys this winter to explore “Corals at the Crossroads.”

You’ll dive into the tropical waters at Key West to discover how the area’s coral reefs have been threatened and what we can do to save them. This fascinating program is just one of thousands offered by ResearchChannel, the best resource for breakthrough research information online, on air and on-demand.

Dr. Brian Lapointe, senior scientist at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, has monitored water quality issues and coral reef degradation at Looe Key, a coral reef in Key West, since the 1980s. He’s been witness to devastating destruction over the years, including nutrient pollution, and the resulting harmful algal blooms and coral reef disease and death. Watch “Corals at the Crossroads” to learn about strategies for saving this incredible marine landscape.

This program from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution was funded through ResearchChannel’s annual Matching Funds Production Awards Program. Each year, ResearchChannel provides winning applicants with funding to enable accredited universities and nonprofit research institutions to share their research through video production. The program aims to raise public awareness of the value of research. "Corals at the Crossroads" debuts on ResearchChannel Wednesday, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
