Retransmission Frequently Asked Questions

Are you interested in broadcasting ResearchChannel? Here are some of our most frequently asked questions about equipment and programming.

Q: What kind of equipment do I need to receive the ResearchChannel satellite downlink?
A:  ResearchChannel transmits a DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) compliant MPEG2 signal. You need a 1.2- or 1.8-meter dish capable of receiving a Ku-band digital signal from Galaxy-18 and a DVB-compliant integrated receiver/decoder. Note: 4DTV and GI 4200 will not decode this signal.

The following vendors will sell this equipment with or without installation.

Q: Can I record and time-shift programming?
A:  No, ResearchChannel blocks have been developed to offer time flexibility by repeating blocks over the course of 24 hours. Typically, the blocks run about 4-6 hours each, with repeats that could air after the broadcast of the first block. Time-shifting could create confusion for viewers who read the on-air ResearchChannel schedule of programs, as the time-shift would not coordinate with these schedules.

Q:  How can I identify our channel? Can I break into the ResearchChannel signal for station identification? Can I break in for specials or commercials?
A:

Station Identification: ResearchChannel programming council requires that the ResearchChannel signal be carried as a whole. It is recommended that station breaks occur before and after ResearchChannel programming blocks.

Specials: Stations can break into a ResearchChannel programming block for local specials provided the break occurs before a ResearchChannel program begins or after the completion of a program.

Commercials: ResearchChannel is a noncommercial programming service and prohibits the insertion of commercials within programming blocks.

Q:  We use an automated system. How can I be sure we switch to a ResearchChannel block at the correct time?
A:  ResearchChannel uses the GPS clock system, and you can synchronize your system with it to ensure switching at the correct time.

Q:  How can I get the ResearchChannel schedule of programs in advance of the publication on your website?
A:  Join the ResearchChannel broadcast schedule e-mail list. You'll receive the weekly schedule with a list of programs that will be premiering during that schedule. The schedules are e-mailed out to the list four weeks in advance of the broadcast dates.
To subscribe, send an e-mail to ResearchChannel.
