Universidad
of Puerto Rico
The Universidad of Puerto Rico (UPR) is the premier Hispanic serving
institution in the United States, with a current enrollment of 67,000
students. UPR offers a wide variety of academic programs, including
31 doctoral and 123 masters programs. Its 11 campuses are fully
accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
UPR has transformed itself from a predominantly teaching institution
into a research university. It has doubled external funding for
R&D every five years since 1985, topping $92 million for 2005.
Ninety-five percent of all articles published by researchers in
Puerto Rico in peer-reviewed scientific journals are generated at
UPR.
Research activities at UPR include projects in behavioral, dental,
cancer and HIV research, as well as projects in materials science,
engineering, earth sciences and social sciences. Many of these are
sponsored by NIH, NSF and other funding agencies.
