Religious scholar Carlos Eire fled to the United States from his homeland of Cuba in 1962 as one of 14,000 unaccompanied children airlifted out by Operation Pedro Pan. He eventually reunited with his mother in Chicago and worked full-time in several jobs before graduating from college and graduate school. Mr. Eire is the T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University, where he has been a faculty member since 1996.
